The Barrington Kayak
In 2013 Australian entrepreneur and owner of Barrington Outdoor Adventure Centre, Brian Kilby, commissioned a project to realise his vision for a 3-meter entry-level crossover kayak, based on decades of experience in whitewater kayaking, instructing and guiding.
The project set out to produce a well-balanced kayak that makes white-water kayaking safe and inclusive for people of varying ages, sizes and strengths, whilst also providing an alternative functional and practical platform for recreational flat water paddling and fishing.
Generous beam and extra width in the nose & tail, combined with a modest rocker increase the stability of the boat on the water. Two hull channels add rigidity to the underside of the boat, and V-shapes in the nose and tail sections help the boat track straight through the water, helping to reduce the weaving motion that results from paddling.
The concept includes features to improve functionality and practicality, focusing on typical entry-level usage on the water, with the main focus being on safety. the large cockpit is designed for universal spraydeck fitment, and the gear hatch is recessed into the deck to prevent snagging on rocks when capsized (a common problem and safety issue for novice and intermediate white-water kayakers). The groove in the front deck provides an intuitive resting slot for a paddle over the kayaker's knees.
The kayak was surface modelled in Rhino and is designed to be rotational moulded from Polyethylene.
